Calgary is accessible from anywhere in continental North America in one day via several Canadian and international airlines. Calgary

Calgary, Alberta, is the gateway city to the Canadian Rockies. Those arriving by air will get a glimpse of the mountains to the west as they land at the Calgary airport. Calgary started out as Canada's first North West Mounted Police outpost in 1870. It grew to become a railway depot and then a "cow town" where area ranchers congregated to sell cattle. Today its cosmopolitan business centers are more tied to the oil industry. The last vestiges of its cow town reputation lie with the Calgary Stampede, known as the world's largest rodeo, held for ten days every July.

 

Banff and Lake Louise

The town of Banff, nestled in a circle of mountains, is the main area of settlement. A first-class tourist resort, it abounds with restaurants, stores, entertainment, and attractions. The world-famous Banff Springs Hotel built in the late 1800's is still the focal point of the town. Canadian Pacific built this monument to the railway age, bringing tourists and settlers to an area previously known only to Indigenous people and a few explorers.

The forerunner of the park as we know it today was created in 1887 as the Rocky Mountain Hotsprings Reserve, following the discovery on Sulfur Mountain of eight natural hot springs. If you can spare the time before this bike tour, plan on spending a few days in Banff & Lake Louise and its surroundings.

Valid identification in the form of a passport is required by Canadian Immigration when entering Canada.

Citizens or permanent residents of the United States can cross the border usually without difficulty but must carry a valid passport.

Visitors from countries other than the United States must have a valid passport and may require other documentation such as visas. Check with the nearest Canadian Consulate or your travel agent well in advance of travel if you are uncertain of entrance requirements.
